About the ports
Reykjavik, Iceland
Iceland's capital and largest city is located on the country's southwest coast at the head of Faxafloi Bay. Settled in 877 AD, Reykjavik has grown into an important seaport and center of government and education with theaters, museums and observatories. Interestingly, this modern city still chooses to use water from nearby hot springs to heat all of its buildings.
Akureyri, Iceland
Nicknamed "the Capital of North Iceland," Akureyri is an important port and fisheries center. It is Iceland's second largest urban area. The area where Akureyri is located was settled in the 9th century. The city was the site of Allied units during World War II. The area has a relatively warm climate due to geographical factors, and the city's ice-free harbor has played a significant role in its history.
Klaksvik, Faroe Islands
Halfway between Norway and Iceland, the Faroe Islands are famous for puffins, wool, whales, and tales of the Vikings. The Northern Isles are where you'll find the Faroes' most dramatic and spectacular scenery, and the town of Klaksvík is a logical base from which to explore the area. Do not forget to pack your camera! The brewery Föroya Bjór in Klaksvík is a Faroese family brewery, founded in 1888.
Geiranger, Norway
Geiranger is where Norwegians escape when they need a vacation. The most breathtaking attraction in Geiranger, and there are many, is the mighty Seven Sisters Waterfall, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of water from an incredible 5,000 feet. Sitting at the head of majestic Geiranger Fjord, the city is surrounded by towering snow-covered mountain peaks, lush, green vegetation and winding hiking trails often enjoyed by the ambitious vacationer.
Olden, Norway
The peaceful town of Olden sits calmly at the edge of the perpetually advancing Jostedal Glacier-which also happens to be Europe's largest glacier, towering 6,200 feet over a deep valley. After you have taken in all of its grandeur, embark on a hike through lush mountain valleys. Alternatively, if you are still feeling especially adventurous, explore the nearby caves and the remarkably well preserved historic sites.
Flam, Norway
Founded by its namesake, Alexander the Great in 332 B.C., Alexandria has been home to many historical figures, including Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Julius Caesar and Euclid. Today the city has a Mediterranean feel, perhaps a remainder of its ancient Roman connection. The charming seaside promenade, colonial buildings and wide avenues make it an exotic, romantic destination.
Bergen, Norway
Once the very seat of the medieval kingdom of Norway, Bergen is a former Viking stronghold encircled by deep fjords, towering mountains, and sweeping glaciers. Today's Bergen is quite welcoming, with much of the medieval flavor remaining in Bergen's harbor. Strike a bargain in one of the many artisans' workshops or visit the famous and always entertaining Fish Market.
London
London is a leading global city and the capital of the former British Empire. From Buckingham Palace to the famous theatre district, London has something to offer for everyone. As the host of the 2012 Olympics, London has been busy making its city and attractions accessible to all.
