Aug. 20 - Tallinn

Toompea CastleAfter an overnight flight, arrive at the Vilnius airport, where a Flying Wheels Travel group host will greet you (if you have not been greeted yet at one of our connecting airports). We will transfer from the airport to the hotel using an accessible coach Once we check into our 4-star accessible hotel in central Tallinn – just yards away from Toompea Castle and park -  you will have the opportunity to unwind and relax before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at the hotel. D

 

Aug. 21 - Tallinn/Lahema National Park/Tallinn

Lahemaa National ParkThe name Lahemaa - the land of gulfs - comes from the numerous gulfs and peninsulas that break up thecoast here. The park covers intact landscapes of different types - coastal lowlands, pine forests, limestone cliffs, stone fields, waterfalls and rapids. It is also unique for its flora and fauna. We will gain superb insight into the Estonian 18-19th century manorial architecture: Kolga, Palmse, Sagadi and Vihula Manor houses, including a visit to one of the manors. Our tour stops for lunch at a typical small fishing village inn where traditional local food is served. The return trip back to Tallinn passes through the idyllic seaside summer spots Vergi/Käsmu and Võsu. BLD

Aug. 22 - Tallinn

TallinnEstonia's capital and largest city, Tallinn sits on the Bay of Finland, directly across from Helsinki. We will find both Scandinavian and Russian influences in the language, culture, and architecture here. Our tour leads through the narrow streets of so called Upper and Lower town. You will enjoy a beautiful bird’s eye-view over the towers of the medieval defense wall and buildings of the Lower town and the waters of the Bay of Tallinn, will see the Toompea Castle, the charming Russian Orthodox St. Nevsky Cathedral, Dome Church, as well as take a stroll in the Lower Town part and the Town Hall Square. After lunch, we will continue our tour to the Kadriorg Palace which is a beautiful northern baroque palace, built by Peter the Great for his wife, Catherine I, in the early 18th century. The grandiose palace and surrounding manicured gardens are a humbling example of Tsarist extravagance, but another important reason for our visit is that it is also home to the foreign art collection of the Art Museum of Estonia. Aug. 25 - Tallinn/Haapsalu/Tallinn

HaapsaluToday we will enjoy a day tour to Haapsalu. This calm and friendly small town located less than 2-hours` drive from the capital enjoys a long standing history as a spa resort. Once a popular summer holiday destination for the Russian aristocracy, modern Haapsalu hosts a number of international festivals and is home to charming restaurants. It is a wonderful little town with narrow streets, a miniature town hall and romantic wooden dwelling houses. On the romantic seaside promenade stands Kuursaal, one of the finest wooden buildings in Estonia. Here you will also find a deep rooted spa culture. The first Haapsalu mud spa opened its doors in 1825 and since then, Haapsalu has attracted spa lovers from all over the world including the Old Russian czars. Its serene vibe is loved by families and romantic couples who enjoy having picnics, visiting spas and sailing. BD

Aug. 24 - Tallinn/Parnu/Riga

RigaToday we depart Tallinn for Riga Latvia with a stop along the way for a short visit of Pärnu. This medieval city has an easygoing and romantic flair to it. Being the largest resort in Estonia, Pärnu is home to a variety of spas and historical bath houses. We will enjoy lunch in the beautiful city and then continue on to Riga where we will check-in to our 4-star accessible hotel which offers elegant, air-conditioned rooms and free Wi-Fi. Riga's historic Old Town and the Latvian National Opera are only a few yards away and the Origo and Stockmann shopping centers are just around the corner. Latvian and international dishes, as well as daily breakfast buffet, are served in the stylish restaurant. Snacks and drinks are available in the Café and Bar. All rooms at the offer satellite TV, a minibar, and a modern bathroom with a hairdryer. A Finnish sauna and a hot tub can be used free all day. Aug. 25 - Riga

RigaThis morning will first enjoy a panoramic tour of Riga including the City center, its green Boulevard Semi-circle, the charming Art Nouveau area, the Latvian National Opera House and the Monument of Liberty. After enjoy our ride through the city will visit the medieval Old Town with historical buildings dating back to the 13th century, narrow streets, town squares and churches. The tour will highlight St. Peter’s and St. John’s churches, Dome Square and Cathedral, Riga Castle, Town Hall, the House of Blackheads, the Swedish Gates, Jacob’s Barracks with Powder tower, Liivs’ Square, the Three Brothers and other historical site. After enjoy lunch in the Old Town you will have the afternoon free to enjoy Riga at your own pace. BLD 

Aug. 26 - Riga/Sigulda/Riga

Turaida CastleWe will enjoy a day-tour to Sigulda.  Its area is known for the beautiful nature that surrounds this lovely city - landscapes formed by the valleys of the River Gauja, as well as for its history. During medieval ages it was one of the first and main centers of German Crusaders who conquered local tribes in the territory of Latvia and Estonia. You will hear legends from those times and will visit the medieval Turaida Castle, which is one of the most popular sights in this area. The partly renovated redbrick castle dates back to the 13th century when it was built by German Crusaders. The tour in the castle gives not only an insight about life in medieval times but also takes you on a journey in history of the area of territories of Latvia and Estonia from the 13th until the 19th  centuries. We will also visit a local farm, where homemade wine is produced. The Baltic countries are not famous for their grape vineyards, but they have their own wine traditions. Here the wine is produced from local seasonal berries and fruits. During the visit you will learn more about the local wines taste three different varieties. BLD

Aug. 27 - Riga/Kurzeme Region/Riga

KuldigaAnother day-tour from Riga brings us on an adventure to the Kurzeme region of Latvia - featuring a nature park in the Abava Valley - an ancient valley formed by the melting glaciers. This is an area with fantastic landscapes – river valleys, meadows, slopes and dolomite exposures. While in the area we will visit the beautiful village of Kuldiga, which has always fascinated and attracted people. Painters compare it to a wonderful picture which you would love to be able to own. It is located on the banks of the River Venta and the historical center of its Old Town in the ancient valley of the Venta is included in the UNESCO national list. Kuldiga once it used to be one of the main trade centers and the capital of the rich Duchy of Courland. The Duchy produced one of the best sailing ships in Europe in those times and even conquered its own colonies -Tobago and Gambia. Today the town is known for its beautiful and unspoiled Old Town. Aug. 28 - Riga/Jurmala/Riga

Central MarketThis morning we will begin our day with a visit to the Riga Central Market. It is not just an interesting place to buy products from local producers, but is also one of the most unique markets in Europe. It is one of the biggest of its type located in the very heart of the city. The market is also interesting due to its buildings - a part of it is located under roofs of 5 big sheds which used to be garages for German Zeppelins during World War I. After time at the market we will travel to Jurmala -  a charming summer resort town located at the Bay of Riga. For centuries it has been a place for recreation and relaxation for people from Riga and abroad. The town is so beloved due to its charming wooden architecture that dates back to the 19th  and beginning of the 20th  century, the golden sand beaches, green pine forests and the Baltic Sea. After time in Jurmala, we will enjoy a dinner show with Latvian traditional folk music. BLD

Aug. 29 - Riga/Rundale Palace/Vilnius

Rundale PalaceWe depart Riga for Vilnius Lithuania with a top on the way for a visit in the charming Rundale Palace, which is Latvia’s version of Versailles and a pearl of Baroque architecture in the Baltics. The palace was built in the 18th century and designed by the famous Russian Court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The palace is surrounded by a beautiful French park which is made according to the original 18th century design. After crossing the border from Latvia into Lithuania, we will stop at the Hill of Crosses. It is a marvelous place - a hill with thousands of crosses in all kinds and sizes. The hill has been significant for Lithuanians for centuries, it has been also visited by the Pope John Paul II.  Upon our arrival in Vilnius, we will check-in to our 4-star accessible hotel located on the main street, Gedimino Prospektas. The hotel offers air-conditioned rooms with cable TV, a minibar, and free Wi-Fi. The rooms are spacious, soundproofed, bright and feature wooden furniture that includes a work desk. Each room has a safe and a private bathroom with amenities and a hairdryer. BLD

Aug. 30 - Vilnius/Trakai/Vilnius

VelniusWe begin our day by touring the beautiful city of Vilnius. We will discover one of the largest and most picturesque Old Towns in Central and Eastern Europe with preserved impressive complex of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical buildings as well as its medieval layout with charming narrow streets and courtyards. We will visit the Vilnius Town Hall and its square, magnificent Vilnius Cathedral, Vilnius University, Gates of Dawn and Gediminas Hill, which provides a spectacular panorama over the Old Town and the surrounding hills. After our morning tour of Vilnius, we will travel to Trakai - a charming wooden village surrounded by five picturesque lakes offering beautiful scenery. Trakai is the historical capital of ancient Grand Duchy of Lithuania. We will visit the medieval red-brick Trakai Castle located on one of the islands of the Lake Galve. Trakai is also known for the Karaimes - people speaking the Turkic language - who have lived here since the 14th century and have preserved their local traditions. BLD

Aug. 31 - Vilnius/Kaunas/Vilnius

KaunasToday we will visit Kaunas, which is the second largest city in Lithuania and its former capital before World War II. Located on the confluence of the Rivers Neris and Nemunas, it is a beautiful city with picturesque landscapes and historical architecture. Some say that the Old Town of Kaunas has the most Hanseatic atmosphere as it used to be a member of Hansa Union during medieval times. After our time in Kaunas, you will have free time in the afternoon to enjoy Vilnius on your own or relax. BLD

Sep. 01 - Vilnius/Druskininkai/Vilnius

SpaWe travel to southern Lithuania today to visit Druskininkai - a resort town built around springs with allegedly healing powers. Essentially located in a forest, the resort is full of nature, with many trees, flower gardens, parks, several lakes and two rivers. The Old Town of Druskininkai, hugged by the broad Nemunas river, dates to the 19th century when people believed that many diseases could be cured by mineral springs. Rich people of the Russian Empire constructed wooden villas here. Many of these buildings with elaborate Swiss, Italian and even Moorish architectural details are renovated to full glory on spacious avenues. BD
